Action for better education in Penicuik and the Borders
In 2007 Jeremy worked with local schools across his constituency to give them a voice in decisions being taken on their behalf. He is supporting the area’s Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament and has pressed for better funding for youth services across the region. With local councillors he has secured over £150,000 additional funding for youth activities in the area. This delivers a key commitment he made in the 2007 elections to support investment in youth services to provide better opportunities for young people.
He has visited nurseries across his constituency to suport more investment for two year olds and has pressed for this in the Scottish Parliament. He also has met with nursery and primary school teachers to discuss making P1 a transition year, similar to the Scandinavian style of teaching.
vocational education
In Penicuik Jeremy is campaigning for the continuation of vocational education opportunities for Penicuik’s teenagers. Funding reductions mean that previous opportunities may be withdrawn.
In 2007 he also worked with secondary school pupils and staff about making every school in the area not just an Eco School but also a Healthy School. This would provide support for better healthy eating and more peer to peer education, such as that provided by the group UP2U in Peebles who Jeremy is supporting to secure funding for 2008/9.
