In just 3 years almost 8,900 self funders in Care Homes were receiving free personal care - 29 per cent more than on introduction in July 2002. A further 40,900 people were in receipt of free personal care at home - 69 per cent more than in July 2002. This shows the huge success of Free Personal Care.

On top of this, Jeremy was part of the successful campaign for free nationwide travel for all pensioners 830,000 older and disabled people have a current concessionary travel pass and are benefiting from the scheme.

Additional investment is needed in for a major programme of investment in Community health facilities making healthcare local for elderly people, with additional respite places in Penicuik and the Borders. Jeremy has served on the management committee of Broomhill Day Centre in Penicuik and has been an active supporter of its outstanding contribution to the elderly in the town.

Jeremy is also part of the campaign to scrap the unfair council tax that penalises older people and replace it with a fairer Local Income Tax. Under a Local Income Tax most pensioners would pay nothing at all.

Former Bank chief Sir Peter Burt said “Pensioners would be almost completely exempt from LIT [Local Income Tax].”
