Safer communities with less crime

In 2006 Jeremy published a pamphlet outlining his priorities for safer communities across his constituency and Scotland. He gained support for 1,000 additional community police officers in Scotland. He is continuing to press for funding to be ring fenced for the officers to provide community policing across the country which would mean at least two additional officers in each new STV Council ward in Scotland.

He outlined is proposals to reform the prison service to reduce the number of people committing another crime when they come out of jail but, for knife crime he moved amendments to the Police Bill in 2006 to establish tougher sentences.

Longer and more robust community sentences will also replace very short term prison sentences that simply reinforce offending behaviour Jeremy believes. He also wants to involve directly young people to help change other young people’s behaviour and young people's forums for youth justice will soon be estabished in the Borders, for the first time, as a direct result of Jeremy's campaigning.
